On Thursday the 13th of March the Loreto Milford senior girl’s Gaelic team went to Loreto Convent Letterkenny to represent our school in the Elaine Winston Memorial Cup for the second year. Last year the Milford girls lost the final to Loreto Letterkenny, but were determined to make a comeback this year and win the cup.
First up Milford played Loreto Letterkenny in the first round. The match started of with a clean catch from the Letterkenny midfielders leading to a point within seconds, but Milford stepped up with
Shannon Mc Groddy scoring a point from the 45 to even up. Milford showed excellent determination throughout the match but Letterkenny were fighting back just as hard. At half time Milford were down by two points with a score of 2-5 to 2-2.Milford came back in the second half with a gaol from Hollie Mc Daid and Amber Barrett with-in minutes of the second half throw in. However Letterkenny upped their game with points scored by Rose Boyle and Naomi Mc Menamin before the final whistle with an end score of 3-7 to 4-2 to Loreto Letterkenny
Milford then went onto play St.Columbas Ballybofey. Milford showed had a brilliant performance dominating the pitch throughout the match. The defence line show a fantastic performance with Niamh Carr making numerous blocks. Half time 3-5 to 1-1. Full time 5-9 to 2-1.
Milford then went onto play Deele College Raphoe with an end score of 4-5 to 2-1 to Milford which meant a final was ahead for the Milford girls against their rivals Loreto Letterkenny.
There was high intensity shown in the final from each teams. It was obvious each team wanted it as bad as the other with exceptional play throughout the game . Loreto Letterkenny took the lead in the first half but Loreto Milford came back with a bite and made a fantastic effort to take the lead with numerous goals in the net and points over the bar. The final whistle blew and Milford had won the match with a score of 7-5 to 4-5.
This game meant a lot to the Milford girls as it was the last game for five of the girls in the school jersey and it also meant a lot to win the cup because of team members close connections to Elaine Winston.
